Get Out, and Make Your Own Kind of Music!
Flicking through Pandora, I stumbled upon The Mamas & The Papas, a 1960s band consisting of lead vocalist Mama Cass Elliot, John Phillips, Denny Doherty, and Michelle Phillips.
Subsequently, one of my favorite (and most inspirational) songs of all time is now: Make Your Own Kind of Music by Mama Cass Elliot, who many thought would not complete The Mamas & The Papas because of her rather heavy image… Instead, she was the perfect compliment to song writer John Phillips, who originally did not want her in the band to begin with.
If you want an inspirational song, check out Mama Cass’ “Make Your Own Kind of Music” and remember to listen to the lyrics really closely.
Aren’t they great?
In this day and age…
…it seems as though we are hailed into certain roles and behaviors. Society figures these out for us, we don’t. We’re sheep! We are also essentially losing our individuality by believing that we are unique because the media is overly-fed by our growing egos.
Have you noticed how everything has to be catered to us? People now complain and criticize every new technological advancement like someone gives a crap what they say. In this way, so we serve technology, or does it serve us? Are we building websites for companies by joining networks like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Yelp? Does that mean that we have essentially been living lies?
What happened to the days when we got our hands dirty and explored the world instead of reading about it online? Mama Cass Elliot wouldn’t have wanted it that way. She passed away of a heart attack two weeks into a sold-out London Concert Event. However, she died loving the skin she was in and doing what she loved.

Here are the Lyrics:
Nobody can tell ya;
There’s only one song worth singin’.
They may try and sell ya,
’cause it hangs them up
to see somone like you.
But you’ve gotta make your own kind of music
sing your own special song,
make your own kind of music even if nobody
else sing along.
So if you cannot take my hand,
and if you must be goin’,
I will understand.
You’re gonna be knowing
the loneliest kind of lonely.
It may be rough goin’,
just to do your thing’s
the hardest thing to do.
But you’ve gotta make your own kind of music
sing your own special song,
make your own kind of music even if nobody
else sings along.
So if you cannot take my hand,
and if you must be goin’,
I will understand.
You gotta make your own kind of music
sing your own special song,
make your own kind of music even if nobody
else sings along.
While they were only together from 1965-1968, The Mamas & The Papas released five albums and eleven top 40 hit singles of all time!
